Director of Safety & Risk ManagementAbout the Role The Director of Safety & Risk Management leads the development and execution of enterprise-wide safety, compliance, risk management, insurance, and loss prevention programs across both corporate and franchise operations. This strategic leader serves as the organization's subject matter expert on transportation safety, occupational safety, regulatory compliance, claims management, and risk mitigation. Working closely with Franchise Owners, Operations, Human Resources, Legal, Insurance Partners, and Executive Leadership, this role is responsible for protecting team members, customers, company assets, and brand reputation. The ideal candidate will champion a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement while reducing workplace injuries, vehicle incidents, insurance losses, and regulatory exposure throughout the organization. Key ResponsibilitiesSafety Leadership & Strategy
- Develop and implement company-wide safety and risk management strategies.
- Establish safety policies, standards, and best practices across corporate and franchise operations.
- Create and manage safety metrics, dashboards, scorecards, and reporting systems.
- Lead initiatives that reduce workplace injuries, vehicle accidents, claims, and losses.
- Promote a proactive culture of safety ownership and accountability.
- Provide executive leadership with regular reporting, trend analysis, and risk mitigation recommendations.
Regulatory Compliance Serve as the organization's lead authority on:
- DOT and FMCSA regulations
- OSHA standards
- Workers' Compensation compliance
- Fleet safety and transportation regulations
- Drug and Alcohol Testing Programs
- Driver Qualification Files (DQFs)
- Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs)
- Hours of Service (HOS) requirements
- Vehicle inspection and maintenance programs
- UCR, IRP, and IFTA compliance
Additional responsibilities include:
- Monitoring regulatory changes and ensuring ongoing compliance.
- Leading internal audits and compliance reviews.
- Acting as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies and inspectors.
Risk Management & Insurance
- Oversee insurance programs and enterprise risk management initiatives.
- Partner with insurance brokers, carriers, and third-party administrators.
- Analyze workers' compensation, auto liability, general liability, and cargo claims.
- Identify trends and implement loss prevention strategies.
- Lead root-cause investigations for significant incidents and losses.
- Develop corrective action plans that reduce claim frequency and severity.
- Support litigation prevention and claims mitigation efforts.
- Participate in insurance renewals, underwriting reviews, and policy evaluations.
Fleet Safety & Transportation Operations
- Establish and maintain fleet safety standards across all operations.
- Manage telematics, driver monitoring systems, and safety technology platforms.
- Develop driver coaching, accident review, and corrective action programs.
- Monitor driver qualifications, eligibility, and motor vehicle records.
- Implement strategies that improve fleet performance and reduce preventable accidents.
Workplace Safety & OSHA Programs
- Lead enterprise-wide OSHA compliance and workplace safety initiatives.
- Develop and maintain safety programs and procedures.
- Conduct field audits, inspections, and risk assessments.
- Ensure timely implementation of corrective actions.
Franchise Support & Training
- Develop and deliver safety certification and training programs.
- Create webinars, workshops, and annual safety conferences.
- Support franchise locations through compliance reviews and action planning.
- Partner with Learning & Development teams to integrate safety leadership into operational training.
- Serve as a trusted advisor on safety, compliance, and risk management matters.
Incident Management & Claims Oversight
- Oversee investigations involving injuries, accidents, and property damage.
- Ensure proper incident documentation and reporting.
- Manage workers' compensation and vehicle accident review processes.
- Coordinate return-to-work programs and injury prevention initiatives.
- Track and report claims performance metrics and trends.
Leadership & Team Development
- Build and lead a high-performing safety and risk management function.
- Coach leaders and franchise owners on safety best practices.
- Foster accountability, leadership development, and continuous improvement.
- Support organizational growth through operational excellence and risk reduction.
Required Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Risk Management, Transportation, Business Administration, Industrial Safety, or a related field.
Experience
- 10+ years of progressive experience in safety, risk management, transportation compliance, insurance, fleet operations, or related disciplines.
- 5+ years of leadership experience managing programs, teams, or multi-location operations.
- Proven success reducing workplace injuries, vehicle accidents, and insurance losses.
- Experience supporting franchise, transportation, logistics, moving, field-service, or multi-site organizations.
Technical Knowledge Strong expertise in:
- DOT and FMCSA compliance
- OSHA regulations
- Workers' Compensation programs
- Commercial insurance and claims management
- Fleet safety and transportation operations
- Accident investigation and root-cause analysis
- Safety management systems and reporting
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
- Associate Safety Professional (ASP)
- Certified Risk Manager (CRM)
- Certified Director of Safety (CDS)
- OSHA 30 Certification
- DOT Compliance Certification
- Experience with captive insurance programs
- Experience implementing telematics and driver monitoring technologies
- Background in transportation, moving services, logistics, waste removal, home services, or franchising environments
Technical Skills
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
- Experience with safety management and compliance platforms
- Working knowledge of telematics solutions such as Samsara, Motive, Geotab, or similar systems
- Strong analytical and reporting capabilities utilizing dashboards and business intelligence tools
Travel & Work Environment
- Ability to travel up to 40% domestically to support corporate and franchise locations.
- Comfortable conducting field inspections and operational audits.
- Ability to occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds.
Pay: $71,593.05 - $125,000.00 per year Benefits:
