Job Description
Olsson is currently seeking a motivated and experienced Environmental and Permitting Specialist to join our team. The ideal candidate will bring proven expertise in conducting natural resource evaluations and performing permitting, including developing permitting strategies for large, complex projects. This role requires effective coordination of fieldwork and subsequent reporting, the ability to direct and provide technical expertise for field and office staff, and effective, proactive interactions with clients, stakeholders, and contractors. Successful candidates will demonstrate adeptness in managing budgets, invoicing, and schedules. Existing positive relationships with local, state, and federal permitting entities are preferred. Background with utility, including oil and gas, and transportation projects is highly valued, along with a comprehensive understanding of key environmental permit programs such as U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Section 404/10, Bureau of Land Management, and U.S. Forest Service special use permits, Colorado Parks and Wildlife High Priority Habitat considerations, NEPA, and wetlands and other natural resource investigations. Strong county/1041 permitting experience, especially in Colorado, along with right-of-way (ROW), access, ditch, railroad, and similar permitting efforts with authorities with jurisdiction. Primary Responsibilities:
- Prepare scope and fee packages, letters, and proposals; lead federal/state/local environmental and permitting efforts with the authorities with jurisdiction; provide technical and permitting oversight; and review/author technical reports.
- Interpret regulations for project design considerations and identify strategic permitting pathways.
- Coordinate project tasks and permit application preparations to meet deadlines.
- Conduct timely and proactive internal and client communications.
- Manage projects and project teams, overseeing day-to-day activities.
We have one current opening and will consider candidates interested in working remotely, hybrid, and from any Olsson office location.

- Bachelor’s degree in Planning, Biology, Ecology, Soils, Environmental Science, Environmental Policy, Natural Resource Management, or related discipline.
- Minimum of 6 years of experience in environmental permitting and regulatory compliance.
- Proficient in interpreting site plans, topographic maps, aerial photographs, and other mapping resources.
- Willingness to learn and expand regulatory knowledge.
- Strong technical writing skills: writing examples may be requested.
- Comfortable presenting to small and large groups, including regulators and members of the public.
- Experience with and a solid understanding of county/1041 regulations, county permits, and other ROW, access, ditch, railroad, and similar permitting with other authorities with jurisdiction.
- A strong work ethic, problem-solving abilities, and ability to independently and lead staff.
- A business mindset and understanding of client needs.

Typical range for this position is $90,000 to $118,000+ and is commensurate with experience relative to the position. Olsson is an EEO employer.
